The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the option to question certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
